“The Dervish series is a large series of drawings on the Sema ritual of the Whirling Dervishes. From the macrocosm to the microcosm the dervish spins out of nothingness, being one of an infinite variety of selves, all in motion and never still. Everything in the universe is spinning, from the atoms in our bodies to the stars and planets around us. For me, the Sema ritual beautifully evokes this idea of a dynamic universe, where we exist as an entity within a unity of multiplicity. This Installation is best experienced with the sound component, which is a recording of the Turkish Ney flute I made inside the kings chamber of the Cheops Pyramid in Egypt. The Ney Flute is central to the Sema and its sound evokes the longing of the soul for the beloved.”
